Ahmedabad University has launched India's first MTech program in Composites, paving the way for the next generation of material scientists.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], October 5: As the demand for sustainable solutions grows, materials innovation is reshaping various industries. Composites—lightweight, durable, high-strength, and energy-efficient materials—are transforming sectors from defense and aerospace to urban infrastructure. In response, Ahmedabad University has taken a significant step by inaugurating India’s first Master of Technology (MTech) program in Composites.

This program has been launched in partnership with the Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA), which is a leader in composite design, development, and testing, and has been recognized by the Government of India as a Centre of Excellence for Composites. Their expertise reinforces the essential industry-academic connection that this initiative aims to cultivate.

The inauguration event featured notable attendees, including Vice Chancellor Professor Pankaj Chandra, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science Professor Sunil Kale, Mr. Punit Lalbhai, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Arvind Limited, and Mr. Pragnesh Shah, Director of ATIRA.

With the establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory, funded by a ₹4.4 crore grant from the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM), Ahmedabad University is poised to become a hub for research in composite materials. Additionally, the University has formed R&D and academic partnerships with industry leaders such as Arvind Composites, Rockman Advanced Composites, EPP Composites, and the Composites Excellence Centre of Asia (CECA), ensuring that students remain at the forefront of innovation and practical application.

Central to this pioneering program is the University’s vision of composites as vital for addressing future challenges and achieving self-reliance in this advanced field. These materials are crucial for reducing vehicle emissions, enhancing fuel efficiency, and creating stronger, lighter, and more sustainable structures. The MTech in Composites allows students to deeply engage in this futuristic discipline, combining rigorous academic training with industry experience.

Professor Sunil Kale, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Ahmedabad University, stated, "We envision the MTech in Composites as a unique and forward-thinking program designed to be flexible, allowing students to focus their studies. This initiative has received strong support from ATIRA, whose extensive industry experience has been invaluable. We are also grateful for the encouragement and backing of Mr. Punit Lalbhai, who has played a crucial role in advancing the research and application of composites at Arvind Limited."

The MTech in Composites aims to nurture a new generation of engineers specifically trained in the science and applications of composite materials. While industries often rely on retraining conventional engineers, this dedicated program equips graduates with specialized knowledge in composites, preparing them for leadership roles in R&D, manufacturing, product design, and even sales and marketing.
