"Brentford icon" Ivan Toney joins Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli

Brentford [UK], August 31: Brentford striker Ivan Toney has joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli on a contract lasting until 2028.

Toney, a key player for Brentford since his arrival in 2020, did not feature in any games for the club after head coach Thomas Frank suggested a move was likely during the recent summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old departs Brentford with an impressive record of 72 goals in 141 appearances, including 36 goals over three seasons in the Premier League.

Toney missed the first half of last season due to an eight-month ban for betting-related offenses. He marked his return with a goal in the Premier League and was included in England's Euro 2024 squad.

Despite limited appearances, Toney contributed significantly, including assisting Harry Kane's winning goal in England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia and scoring in a penalty shootout against Switzerland.

Toney’s successful stint at Brentford began in the summer of 2020 when he transferred from Peterborough for an initial fee of around £5m. He played a crucial role in the club’s promotion by scoring 31 goals in the Championship.

In the Premier League, Toney scored 12 goals in his first season and 20 in the 2022/23 season, ranking behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane in the scoring charts. After serving his ban, he returned in January and scored four goals in 17 appearances last season.

Brentford coach Thomas Frank praised Toney’s contributions, stating, "It has been a pleasure to work with Ivan over the past four years. He averaged more than one goal every two games, which is an incredible achievement. On the pitch, he was a fantastic goalscorer, link-up player, and leader. It's been a wonderful journey, and while we will miss him, we're happy he has the chance to explore a new chapter in his career. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend.”
