London [UK], August 30: England batter Joe Root offered special praise for Gus Atkinson after witnessing his impressive performance on the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

Root, who is approaching the milestone of being England's most celebrated Test batter, showcased his skill by raising his bat to mark his 33rd Test century, equalling the record held by former England captain Alastair Cook.

While Root's milestone was a highlight, it was Atkinson who particularly caught his eye. The 26-year-old pacer impressed Root with his aggressive stroke play, drawing comparisons to South Africa’s legendary all-rounder Jacques Kallis.

Root commented, "It was really good watching Gussy bat towards the end. Being at the other end when he hit those straight sixes was incredible. It was like watching Jacques Kallis. It was a great innings from him, and there were some strong partnerships along the way."

Atkinson remained unbeaten on 74* at the end of the day, celebrating his maiden fifty. Despite Atkinson’s stellar performance, Root's achievement of matching Cook’s record for the most Test centuries by an English batter was the day's major highlight.

Root spoke about his relationship with Cook, saying, "It’s nice, but my focus is on contributing to the team’s success. Cookie has always been someone I look up to and consult with, especially during tough times. His support has been invaluable."
