World U20 Athletics Championships: Aarti sets a new national record to win bronze in the women's 10,000m race walk
Lima [Peru], August 31: Aarti secured a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000m race walk at the World U20 Athletics Championships, setting a new national U20 record. Her time of 44:39.99s marked India's first medal at the event.
The 17-year-old improved her previous national record of 47:21.04s, which she had set earlier this year at the National Federation Cup U20 Championships in Lucknow.
The gold and silver medals were won by China's Zhuoma Baima (43:26.60) and Meiling Chen (44:30.67), respectively.
In addition to Aarti's achievement, other national records were broken during the championships. Pooja Singh set a new U20 women's national record in the high jump with a leap of 1.83m, finishing second in her qualification group and ninth overall. Sharuk Khan established a new U20 national record in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:45.12s.
The World Athletics U20 Championships 2024, taking place in Lima from August 28 to 31, features 43 Indian athletes, including 23 men and 20 women.
